Different scents can trigger certain therapeutic effects on the body. Scented candles can be used to promote relaxation, relieve stress or create a certain ambience in an environment. Let’s begin on creating your very own scented candles!
Why Make Your Own DIY Candles?
Certain candles can sometimes release dangerous chemicals as the candle gives off smoke. This is especially so for candles made of paraffin, which tends to be cheaper. According to CNN, some of the chemicals used in candles are carcinogenic and contain other heavy metals and paraffin. With these facts in mind, candles made of natural waxes are the healthiest options when creating your own candles.
Powerful Effect of Scents
Scents are first processed in the Olfactory bulb of your nose. Signals are then along the bottom of your brain to the amygdala and hippocampus, which are the part of the brain that processes emotions and memory. This is the reason why you would reminisce about previous events when you take in a scent. Other senses (Visual, auditory and tactile sensations) do not pass through these same parts of the brain as smell. This is why scents are excellent at triggering emotions as compared to our other senses.
This effect that scent has on the mind can also help in allowing us to remember things more clearly. This makes candles perfect when we are memorizing or studying.
Steps in Making a Candle
Step 1: Pick out a container to use as your candle. Measure out an appropriate amount of beeswax for this container.
Step 2: Pour the wax into a metal bowl and place it over a pot of simmering water. Allow it to melt for 10 – 15 minutes, stirring frequently to allow even heating of the wax.
Step 3: Once the wax has completely melted, it’s time to add your favorite essential oils. Add an appropriate amount of oil into the wax and stir for a few seconds.
Step 4: Attached the Wick to the bottom of the container before pouring in the solution. You can do so by dipping the base of the wick into the solution of wax and leaving it to harden at the bottom of the container for 3 – 5 minutes.
Step 5: Secure the wick by using a pair of chopsticks. You can do so by sandwiching the wick in between the pair of chopsticks. This is to ensure that the wick would remain centered as you pour the wax mixture into the container.
Step 6: Pour the hot wax into the container when it is around 140 degrees, do ensure that the wick stays centered as you’re pouring the solution in. Be cautious when handling hot wax. Leave the solution to cool for 5 hours in room temperature.
Step 7: Cut the wick to an appropriate length (Less than half an inch long).
